The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is the government institution responsible for overseeing environmental management issues in Tanzania. Its role is to advise the government on all matters related to management of environment. NEMC provides for a legal and institutional framework for sustainable management of the environment, prevention and control pollution, waste management, environmental quality standards, public participation, environmental compliance and enforcement, research and awareness rising.

Any person, being a proponent or a developer of a project is require by the Environmental Management Act, 2004 to undertake or cause to be undertaken, at his own cost, an environmental impact study.
